King-Chavez-Parks
Program
Central
Michigan University and the King/Chavez/Parks (KCP) Initiative Fund of
the State of Michigan sponsored six workshops this past June. The main
purpose of the workshops is to expose students from under- represented
groups to a college experience.
The
Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions (CHP) presented
a weeklong program, as part of the KCP initiative. This workshop was designed
to provide students with a broader understanding of the various health
professions while exploring personal characteristics necessary for self
identifying a career direction. Twelve CHP faculty and numerous
graduate and undergraduate students participated in the workshop. Twenty-six
high school students were
provided
information and hands on activities in the area of speech/language pathology,
audiology, physical therapy, sports medicine, health fitness, physical
education, medicine and Internet search skills. In addition, students
learned the basics of communicating through finger spelling and sign language.
The
Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions is committed
to this endeavor and will be planning a similar program for June of 2002.
