Frank E. BelsitoFRANK BELSITO

Frank E. Belsito, D.O., M.M.M., is a family medicine physician and Network Medical Director for Metropolitan Health Corporation, Grand Rapids, Michigan. A graduate of Central Michigan University and Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed his post-graduate training at Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital (Metropolitan Hospital) in Grand Rapids. He entered active duty in the U.S. Army in 1983 as a Captain in the Medical Corp serving as Officer in Charge of the Fort Sheridan Health Clinic returning to Grand Rapids to begin family practice in 1986. In 1992 he became Regional Medical Director West Michigan for Blue Care Network (BCBS) and in 1994 lead initiatives and helped create the Metro Health PHO. In l998 he earned a Masters in Medical Management from Tulane University.

Dr. Belsito has served as Board member and past President of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians, past President of the Kent County Osteopathic Medical Association and is a past Alumni Board of Governors member for Mid Western University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine; Associate Adjunct Professor, Central Michigan University, College of Business, College of Extended Learning; and Clinical Assistant Professor, Family Medicine, Grand Valley State University, Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Program.

Currently Dr. Belsito is the President of the Board of the West Michigan Regional Delivery Network that includes five member hospitals and over 600 physicians. His role as Medical Director for Metropolitan Health Corporation includes overseeing 13 practices and 53 providers.
 
 
 

Tom BrownTOM BROWN

Tom Brown is entering his 14th season as commissioner of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He became the GLIAC’s fifth commissioner on August 1, 1992.

A graduate of Central Michigan University in 1959, Brown received his Master’s in Physical Education and Mathematics from CMU in 1966. While an undergraduate at Central Michigan Brown played basketball and baseball for the Chippewas.

Brown is a former President of Northwood University. He has held a long association with Northwood that began in 1963 when he joined the institute as an assistant professor of mathematics, athletic director, business manager and men’s basketball coach. Brown currently serves as Senior
Advancement Officer and Consultant to the President at Northwood.

Since joining the GLIAC, Brown has served on various NCAA committees, including his current appoint to the Division II Management Council, the governing body of Division II. He also sits on the Budget and Finance committee, the Diversity Task Force, the Football Task Force, and
the Honors Committee for the NCAA.

Brown is also involved on many local leadership groups including Fraser-Pinconning Fire Board, the Saginaw Valley Sports Commission, and the Parish Council at St. Anne Catholic church in Linwood, Mich.

Besides his commissioner position, Brown has operated his own consulting firm since 1982. Thomas J. Brown and Associates consults for educational institutions and businesses.

Brown and his wife, Pat, reside in Linwood, Mich. They are parents of four daughters, Suzanne, Cheryl, Carol and Jeanette.

 

 
 
 
KEVIN R. GRAY

Kevin R. Gray currently is Development Manager for the Sparrow Foundation in Lansing, Michigan.  The Sparrow Foundation is the fund-raising arm of Sparrow Health System.  He is responsible for raising money and managing volunteer committees to support several key service lines within the health system:  Cardiology, Neurology, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics. In addition, Kevin is the foundation’s planned giving officer and grant writer. His current duties, however, are changing as he was recently assigned the job of overseeing a five-year, $12 million capital campaign at Sparrow.

Prior to joining the Sparrow Foundation in December of 2000, Kevin was Director of Communications for the Michigan Grocers Association in Lansing. He was charged with keeping many in the food business (primarily grocery) apprised of current legislative issues, and promoted MGA’s many activities outside of state politics. Kevin came to MGA from the Michigan House of Representatives, where he served on the House Republican Communications staff from 1990 to 1996. Prior to his legislative stint, he was a Communications Specialist for St. Joseph’s Medical Center in South Bend, Indiana.

Kevin is a 1989 graduate of Central Michigan University, earning a Bachelors of Arts degree in journalism. He also received his Certificate of Fund-raising Management from Indiana University’s School of Philanthropy in 2004.  Kevin most recently received a certificate of completion in the Broad Graduate School of Business at Michigan State University.

Kevin and his wife, Carey, reside in Lansing.  They have a 5-year-old son, Dillon.  Kevin is a member of East Lansing Rotary and the Association of Fundraising Professional’s mid-Michigan chapter. Community service projects he is involved with include Athletes 4 Kids – a mentoring program that brings college, high school, and former athletes together with at-risk kids in the Lansing area; and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Kevin received a Meritorious Achievement Award from the American Society of Association Executives in 2000 for his work on the Michigan Grocers Association’s 75-year-old statewide magazine entitled the Michigan Food News. He also accepted the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award in 2004 from the Boy Scouts of America for Sparrow’s Athletes 4 Kids program.

 
 
 
Lisa HaddenLISA HADDEN

Ms. Hadden has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Healthy Community Partners in Saginaw, Michigan for the last eight years. The non-profit community based organization previously received funding from the Kellogg Foundation through the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University and currently receives funding from Saint Mary's and several other organizations. Her responsibilities include coordinating a Community Defined HealthTM program. This program brings together nursing students from Saginaw Valley State University, medical students from Michigan State University and neighbors from the Cathedral District neighborhood in Saginaw to develop new knowledge about what creates and sustains health in the neighborhood. Ms. Hadden also works as a community organizer utilizing an asset based approach to community development. She facilitates neighborhood participation in a local Capacity Inventory, which identifies the gifts, talents and skills of neighbors and connects them by common interest and community building projects. As a result, neighbors and residents are able to discover their own resources and become co-producers of health, moving far beyond the idea of a patient as a mere consumer of health.

Ms. Hadden has extensive experience in the development of primary care health systems and community-based programs. She served for six years as the Executive Director of a rural community health center in a medically underserved area of northeast Michigan. She was architect and director of the Recruitment and Retention Program with the Michigan Primary Care Association, which was the first statewide service to match health professions with medically underserved populations. She also served as CEO of the National Procedures Institute, which trains primary care physicians in procedural skills.

Ms. Hadden served for three years, by gubernatorial appointment, as Chair of the Michigan Certificate of Need Commission and Chief Liaison to the Michigan State Legislature providing oversight in the development and review of regulatory policies governing hospital expenditures. Most recently, Ms. Hadden was awarded a "Creating Healthier Communities Fellowship" from the Health Forum in San Francisco based on her project "Neighborhood Defined Health Program." This program is recognized nationally for its innovative integration of asset based community development and health professions education. Two years ago she was invited to become an adjunct faculty member of the Asset Based Community Development Institute, co-directed by John McKnight and Jody Kretzmann at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. Ms. Hadden also serves as Adjunct Instructor for the College of Human Medicine, Department of Family Practice, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan and holds a faculty position as an instructor in the College of Nursing at Saginaw Valley State University. She has an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education and is finalizing a Master's Degree in English Composition and Communications, both from CMU. She has published several articles detailing her work in Saginaw's neighborhoods. They include "The Community as Co-Producer of Health" in the Jan/Feb 2000 issue of the Health Forum Journal, and "Community Defined Health: Thinking from the Inside Out," in the Fall 2000 issue of Metropolitan Universities Magazine.

 
 
 
MARILYN HUBBARD

Through a combination of formal education, experience and personal growth, Dr. Hubbard has become a pioneer and an authority on entrepreneurial and transformational leadership. Well-known and respected for her work in building coalitions, partnerships and strategic alliances within the community, Dr. Hubbard is on the senior leadership team with the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit and serves as the Corporate Vice President for Organization and Community Partnerships. She is accountable for aligning the System's mission, vision and values with its commitment to corporate responsibility by and addressing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of their 17,000 employees and creating external partnerships that are economically, socially and environmentally healthy for the community.

Prior to this appointment, for 10 years she was Director of Training and Organization Development with Health Alliance Plan and an independent business consultant, trainer and change agent specializing in skilled-based training, personal and professional development, performance management, large-scale change, work-life initiatives and corporate culture enhancement.

Dr. Hubbard's interest in the economic empowerment of women led her to become the founder of the National Association of Black Women Entrepreneurs, a 5,000 member international network for entrepreneurial and enterprising women. Dr. Hubbard has inspired and assisted thousands of women pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams. Because of her leadership and advocacy on behalf of women and minorities, she has served as an advisor to Michigan governors and mayors and to the administrations of Presidents Clinton, Bush, Reagan and Carter. She did the initial research and development for the Detroit Self-employment Project, the pioneering program to move welfare recipients from public dependency to business ownership. She has been a guest lecturer at the Harvard, Darden, University of Michigan and Central Michigan University business schools.

In her popular business book on personal transformation, published in English and Chinese, Sisters Are Cashing In, Dr. Hubbard integrates business and spiritual principles and offers insights into the emotional, mental and spiritual factors that can lead you into debt and poverty. ROGER KERR

Roger R. Kerr is President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Michigan Community Hospital(CMCH) in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He has served in this role since 2001. CMCH is a 137-bed, not-for-profit, locally-governed, community hospital offering a full range of health and wellness services from the Hospital campus and off-site locations. CMCH recently signed a partnership agreement with the University of Michigan to provide cancer treatment in Mt. Pleasant for residents of the central Michigan. Mr. Kerr was instrumental in establishing this partnership with the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center which is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Mr. Kerr holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and a Masters in Business Administration from Central Michigan University. He began his professional career at CMCH 39 years ago and has served as Medical Technologist, Laboratory Manager, Ancillary Administrator and Chief Operating Officer prior to being selected President and CEO.

Mr. Kerr serves on the Executive Committee of the Hospital Council of East Central Michigan and the Boards of United Way of Isabella County, Middle Michigan Development Corporation and the Central Michigan University Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions. Roger is also a member of the Mt. Pleasant Kiwanis Club.

 
 
 
Kenneth W. KopkeKENNETH W. KOPKE

Ken Kopke is the retired Vice President of the Work-Fit Division of Healthtrax, Inc. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations, sales and growth of the division. In addition, he was President of Athletic Training Services, Inc., (ATS) a consulting and recruiting company located in Mt. Pleasant, MI. He was the Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Medicine at Central Michigan University for 17 years until leaving in 1986 to start ATS.

Mr. Kopke founded and created the Healthletics Program after a number of years consulting for General Motors on in-house rehabilitation, fitness/wellness programs and ergonomics. Work-Fit now directs its attention toward all kinds of manufacturing, business, healthcare and education institutions trying to assist them in reducing their healthcare cost through the use of Sports Medicine programming.

Mr. Kopke holds an undergraduate degree in Education from the University of Toledo and a master's degree in Education from Bowling Green State University, while completing an MSA in Administration. He is the past president of the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society, and in 1991 was elected to the MATS Hall of Fame. In September 1992, Mr. Kopke was elected to CMU's Athletic Hall of Fame. Most recently, he was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association's Hall of Fame. Mr. Kopke serves on a number of boards and commissions as well as the local township board.

 
 
 
Terence F. MooreTERENCE F. MOORE

Terence F. Moore is president and chief executive officer of MidMichigan Health, Midland, Michigan, which operates three hospitals, two nursing homes, and eight other subsidiaries. In addition, MidMichigan Health owns a one-third interest in another healthcare system. He has been CEO of the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland and then MidMichigan Health for 25 years. Mr. Moore oversees approximately 3,000 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $400,000,000.

Mr. Moore holds a master's degree in hospital administration from the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, and Missouri. He also holds a MBA and B.S. degree from Central Michigan University where he has done additional graduate work in economics and was awarded an honorary doctorate of public service in 1990. He was a lieutenant and paratrooper in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968.

Mr. Moore serves on numerous boards, including Chemical Financial Corporation and Michigan Molecular Institute. He has published 55 articles, and co-authored, co-edited or authored eight books. In 1986, he received the Regents Award for the State of Michigan (which is their highest award) from the American College of Healthcare Executives. In October 1991, he received the Midland Rotary's first Vocation Award for his efforts to improve the quality of life for others. He received the Michigan Hospital Association's highest award, the Meritorious Key Award, in 1992. In June 1993, he received a Central Michigan University Centennial Award, and in 1995 he received a Paul Harris Award from the Midland Rotary Club. In 1997 he was named to the Central Michigan University ROTC Hall of Fame and also received The Toastmaster's Leadership Award for outstate Michigan. In 2001, he received an honorary doctorate from Northwood University.

 
 
 
Darnella Robinson-NettlesDARNELLA NETTLES

Darnella Robinson-Nettles is the founder of NetCol Healthcare Management Solutions, Inc. (NCHMS), a management and consulting firm specializing in healthcare management, finance and information systems. Ms. Nettles' firm is a pioneer in the development of consulting support services in health care business development and information technology utilization. As President and CEO, Ms. Nettles ensures that the corporate mission gives focus to exceed the expectations of their clients; supporting improved healthcare delivery, service and health status. She has held consulting roles to facilitate feasibility studies to provide strategic planning for facility, provider, community health centers and government entities delivering care to underserved and needy populations.

Additionally, Ms. Nettles has an international focus, providing consulting services in South Africa as part of an initiative to provide health care to its 78% underserved population. Accordingly, Ms. Nettles has also published articles that address health care access, cost, reimbursement and technological literacy. She also lectures and currently serves on various boards and community task force with a focus on health education and access. In June 1999, Ms Nettles was honored with the Entrepreneur Special Award Recognition by the State of Michigan 36th District, 9th Legislature.

Ms. Nettles has over 25 years of healthcare background and experience in management, finance and information systems. Ms. Nettles is an honor graduate of both University of Detroit-Mercy with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Central Michigan University Master's in Health Administration. During her career, she has held administrative positions in corporate operations and project management with her last position as Vice-President of Operations and Systems Development, prior to starting NetCol Healthcare Management Solutions, Inc.

 
 
 
Gene Ragland GENE RAGLAND

Gene Ragland '66, MD resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Ragland held many leadership roles while a student at Central Michigan University, including president of the freshman class, vice president of the student body while presiding over the student senate, and president of the student body. He was honored as Senator of the Year during his sophomore year, and recipient of the David H. Morgan Leadership Award. Dr. Ragland completed his formal education at the University of Michigan, where he attended medical school.

After completing his residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was chief resident, Dr. Ragland became medical director of the hospital's emergency department from 1985-1997 and served as the chief of staff from 1996-1997. Dr. Ragland presided over the Washtenaw County Medical Society in 1993 and held the presidency of the Huron Valley Physician Association; an independent practice association that delivers managed care to 120,000 patients from 1997-2000.

During his career, Dr. Ragland treated over 130,000 patients. He has retired from clinical practice.

 
 
 

KAREN ROSS

Karen L. Ross, FHFMA is the Director of Finance for Sparrow Development, Inc., the for-profit arm of Sparrow Health System of Lansing, Michigan.   As the Director of Finance for Sparrow Development, Inc., Karen is responsible for the finance, reimbursement, accounting, and budgeting for Sparrow Development, Inc. and its subsidiaries as well as Home Health Care of Sparrow, Inc. and Sparrow Foundation.  Sparrow Development, Inc. consists of the Michigan Athletic Club, Pharmacy Plus, Sparrow Regional Medical Supply & Pharmacy, Sparrow Practice Management Company and Sparrow Development.  Prior to joining Sparrow Health System in June 1998, Karen was the Chief Financial Officer and Finance Administrator for Central Michigan Community Hospital (CMCH) in Mt. Pleasant Michigan.  CMCH was a 151-licensed bed acute care facility with home care services and physician practices.  Karen joined CMCH in 1988 as a staff accountant and was promoted to Accounting Director in 1989 and Chief Financial Officer in 1995.  Prior to starting her career in healthcare, Karen was an Associate National Bank Examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a division of the U.S. Treasury Department, stationed in South Bend Indiana.

Karen is a graduate of Central Michigan University with Bachelors in Business Administration degree (1985) with majors in Accounting and Management Information Systems and a Masters degree in Business Administration (1993).   Karen is a member of Healthcare Financial Management Association (Great Lakes Chapter), where she has received the William G. Follmer Bronze Award (1996), Robert H. Reeves Silver Award (2000), Frederick T. Muncie Gold Merit Award (2004) and the Francis E. Williams Outstanding Member Award (1997).  She is a past-president of the Great Lakes Chapter and member of numerous committees.  She is also a member of the Michigan Associate of Certified Public Accountants.  Karen has been involved in numerous community service organizations such as Business and Professional Women, Christmas in April, Jr. Achievement, United Way and U.S. Jaycees.  Karen has also guest lectured on healthcare finance at both Central Michigan University and University of Michigan.

 
 
 
RAKESH SAXENA

Rakesh N. Saxena M.D. specializes in internal medicine and has been in private practice in Alma MI for more than 30 years.  Dr. Saxena is a graduate of Queens College, Varanasi, India. His postgraduate training was done at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India.  After completing his residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Allen Park Michigan, he completed a fellowship in gasteroenterology at Lahey Clinic in Boston, MA.  Dr. Saxena is board certified in internal medicine.

 Dr. Saxena is a member of the American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society, Michigan Society of Internal Medicine, where he served as a trustee.  He is also a member of the American Medical Directors Association and the Gratiot County Medical Society, where he currently presides.  Dr. Saxena is active on the staff of Gratiot Medical Center since 1974, where he served as chief of staff in 2000 and 2001.  He has served as a consulting physician at Masonic Pathways, a continuing care retirement community, in Alma since 1991.

 Dr. Saxena has dedicated much of his practice to the geriatric population of the area.  He, along with another local physician, created “Physician Outreach.”  Through Physician Outreach, Dr. Saxena is providing extensive community education on medical problems that affect the elderly.  In 2004, he was honored in Michigan Medicine for his commitment to educating the elderly. 

 
 
 
PAMELA SOOK

Pamela Sook has been the Coordinator for the Michigan Model for Comprehensive School Health Education Curriculum and the Safe & Drug Free Schools Coordinator for the Gratiot-Isabella Regional Education Service District since 1992. As the Michigan Model Coordinator working with a five county region, Pam’s responsibilities include grant writing and project over-site, assisting schools with implementation of the K-12 Michigan Model, developing and conducting teacher training and other health related professional development. In addition Pam coordinates with the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Department of Community Health to provide schools with materials and technical assistance in the areas of HIV/AIDS education, sexuality education, nutrition/physical activity education, and policy related issues such as asthma, medication distribution, and wellness. As Coordinator of the federal Safe & Drug Free Schools program, Pam manages the grant process and assists schools in providing research-based programs and professional development to help prevent substance abuse and violence and to improve school climate and culture and safety.

Prior to working for the Gratiot-Isabella RESD, Pam was the Health Promotion Specialist for Athletic Training Services, Inc. where she conducted analysis of industrial workers’ compensation injuries and projected savings based on the implementation of athletic training prevention and treatment practices. She was also Coordinator of the Human Performance Lab for Central Michigan University where she managed and administered the laboratory activities, provided student instruction, supervised the cardiac rehabilitation program, and conducted patient and staff education.

Pam has had a passion for health long before entering the health profession. She has enjoyed a long term interest in nutrition and cooking and believes that maintaining balance in one’s life is vital to health and wellbeing.

Pam has a Masters in Health Education from Central Michigan University, a Bachelor’s in Education from Eastern Illinois University, is a Certified Health Education Specialist. In addition, she is a certified trainer for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention with the Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc. Pam is also a member of the Comprehensive School Health Coordinators’ Association (CSHCA) and will be Treasurer during 2005-2006 school year and in the past, has served as president. The CSHCA is a statewide association whose goals are to promote and advocate for healthy youth and coordinated school health programs.
