The New Name

The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions enters an elite category nationally as only the fourth named college among the 110-member institutions comprising the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions. In addition, it becomes the only named college of health professions in the nation.

Historically, the naming of a college brings special distinction and recognition. It not only elevates the college to a higher level of prominence nationally, but also creates commensurate expectations for leadership and excellence. In short, named colleges are commonly held to higher expectations and standards, and in so doing, inspire and advance a tradition of excellence.

The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation was established in 1936 by Grace A. Dow in memory of her husband, Dr. Herbert H. Dow, the founder of The Dow Chemical Company. Since its inception, the Foundation has granted more than $285 million to projects and programs within Michigan, including more than $8 million in gifts to CMU. The most recent, a $5 million gift to the College, will be used to help support the construction of CMU's health professions building. It is the largest single gift ever received by CMU. The naming of the College of Health Professions for this distinguished foundation recognizes a long-standing relationship between CMU, the Dow family and the Foundation.

In recognizing Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow, we celebrate pioneering spirits and a tradition of creativity and brilliance that has produced a legacy through the Foundation, which continues to advance the welfare and health of Michigan residents. The College follows a similar calling through its enduring commitment to advancing learning, knowledge and excellence in practice and to advancing the health and well- being of the public served by its educational programs.
