It is the responsibility of all individuals, students, faculty and clinical instructors, to maintain the program’s quality, and to strive for excellence in service and learning. The faculty’s desire is to instill in students the importance of life-long learning and growth, and to promote good citizenship and civic responsibility. Athletic training students must be committed to the advancement of the athletic training education program and the future of the athletic training profession. PRIDE in self, the athletic training program, the community of Mt. Pleasant and Central Michigan University, and the PASSION to pursue a career in athletic training is a requisite and continuing requirement of the Athletic Training Education Program.

Professional Phase Description

The professional phase of the athletic training major provides extensive academic and clinical experiences for the athletic training student. The four semesters that define the professional phase include four semesters of coursework, clinical education experiences and practical field experiences, with the final semester culminating in an internship experience.

The professional phase coursework and clinical education experiences will continue to develop the skills and knowledge in the field of Athletic Training, and build on the information acquired during the selection semesters. During the practical field experiences the professional athletic training student will be placed at one of our on-campus or affiliate sites under the supervision of clinical instructor. In addition to working side-by-side with certified athletic trainers, the student will also have the opportunity to interact with other health-care providers including physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists, nurses, EMTs and PTAs.

Internship Phase Description

The final semester is a 15-week internship experience. It is this experience that permits students the opportunity to receive in-depth, on-the-job training. This capstone experience helps students put all their knowledge and skills into practice, and will provide the student with a head start to their careers.

The athletic training student must be prepared to meet the rigors of the professional phase, and be committed and dedicated to wanting more than to meet the minimum standards. The Athletic Training Education Program provides students a multitude of opportunities, to advance their knowledge and skills, to become successful entry-level certified athletic trainers. The Athletic Training Education Program faculty and staff encourage each student to MEET THE CHALLENGE.
