The professionals associated with the Athletic Training Program, hence athletic training education, embrace the Vision Statements and Strategic Plans of Central Michigan University and The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions.

PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT

Committed to being a leader in athletic training education through excellence in learning and clinical service, for the preparation of highly qualified and skilled BOC entry-level certified athletic trainers (ATC).

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Goal I
Provide innovative and active learning opportunities through participation in classroom, instructional laboratory and experiential learning environments.

Objectives

  • Provide educational experiences that promote critical-thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning skills.
  • Promote the development of cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills through the utilization of information technology and innovative teaching styles with a strong theory-to-practice approach.
  • Collaborate with campus and area professionals to provide venues for student placement in clinical field experiences.
  • Maintain high academic and ethical standards that exceed the requirements determined by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Goal II
Instill in students a strong commitment to providing culturally compotent and quality athletic training services to athletes and physically active individuals.

Objectives

  • Provide students the opportunity to serve in multidisciplinary settings and be part of a diverse culture.
  • Foster self-assessment of the effectiveness of prevention, evaluation, and management techniques and encourage the incorporation of new ideas into patient care.
  • Support venues for students to observe and interact with faculty, and other health care and medical professionals in the delivery of quality care to patients.

Goal III
Encourage projects between faculty, clinical supervisors and students through various educational and scholarly activities to promote collaborative and leadership skills.

Objectives

  • Encourage and support attendance at state, regional and national conferences, workshops, seminars and/or lectures.
  • Develop innovative educational programs to advance student and faculty knowledge through on-campus collaboration with other health care programs.
  • Instill in students the importance of contributing to the profession's body of knowledge through conducting and publishing research in scientific and professional journals.
  • Support activities of the Student Athletic Trainers Organization (SATO) as a registered student organization.
  • Assist students in securing application for state, regional and national scholarships.

Goal IV
Foster lifelong learning through the development of professional activities and programs that will assist the present and future ATC as a multi-skilled professional.

Objectives

  • Maintain status as a BOC CEU provider.
  • Create opportunities for students and colleagues to advance their knowledge in current/contemporary managed care issues in order to meet the changing needs of the health care delivery system.
  • Encourage exploration of complementary and related fields in the health professions.
  • Promote creative and scholarly activity through collaborative activities among students and faculty within the College of Health Professions.
  • Encourage student membership in the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society (MATS) and the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).
