PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION As part of the criteria for selection to the Professional phase of the Athletic Training/Sports Medicine major, a student is required to have the verification of practical experience form completed to verify the hours spent in an athletic training/sports medicine practical experience. The primary purpose of this requirement is to have the potential athletic training student experience various work settings of the certified athletic trainer. Secondarily, the student may have the opportunity to begin to network with athletic trainers, as well as, other health and/or medical professionals. Additionally, potential sites for a future internship experience or even employment may be identified. The
student must complete a MINIMUM OF 120 HOURS of practical experience in an
athletic training or sports medicine related setting. Examples of settings
include, but are not limited to, a private sports medicine or rehabilitation
clinic, a corporate or industrial injury care/rehabilitation facility, a
high school or a college/university.* A health-care provider, preferably a
certified athletic trainer, must supervise the hours in order for the
student to be given credit for the experience. If a certified athletic
trainer is not available due to the student's geographical location, a
physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist or paramedic may be
utilized. Students who are unable to arrange an experience, under the
supervision of a certified athletic trainer, should consult their major
advisor regarding the acceptability of their experience. INSTRUCTIONS FOR VERIFICATION OF PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE FORM
The
verification of practical experience form, found as a
part of the application packet, must be completed
by the supervising health-care provider and then
placed in a sealed envelope with the health-care
provider's signature across the seal of the
envelope. If a student has compiled 120 hours from different venues or
health-care providers, the student must have a verification of practical
experience form completed from each venue or health-care provider. that he
or she worked with for his or her experience. If more than one
copy of the verification of practical experience is needed, it is the
student's responsibility to make additional copies of the verification of
practical experience form. The student is
also responsible for including the
verification of practical experience form within its
sealed envelope in the application packet.

Professional PHASE Clinical education represents the athletic training student’s formal acquisition, practice and evaluation of the entry-level athletic training clinical proficiencies through classroom, laboratory or field experiences under the supervision of a clinical instructor.
