General Information

Michigan is facing a major problem with increases in obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Schools and universities are trying to combat these health risks by educating students in school settings. The Center for the Enhancement of Physical Education Programming (CEPEP) is a service at CMU that works to conduct research and provide information and materials for schools in Michigan in efforts to improve the quality of the educational experience of students.

CEPEP is headed by project director, Ray Allen, Ph.D., director of operations, Monica Folske, M.S., and Research Analyst, Silvana Spindler, M.A. They are committed to working with physical educators across Michigan so that they are better equipped to help their students become fit, be competent movers, and acquire the character traits that help them function successfully in social situations.

Mission & Goals

The mission of CEPEP is to assist school districts in Michigan with the services, materials, and support they need to develop programs of physical education that effectively impact the quality of the lives of those they serve.

CEPEP aims to help schools engage in program design and revision, implementing effective instruction, and participating in regular evaluation practices that result in continuous program improvement. Materials and procedures are created that facilitate effective instruction, assessment and professional development.

Another goal is to engage in collaborative research with practitioners on common problems of practice. The researchers constantly search for innovative procedures and products that contribute to changing the practice of teaching as society changes. The final goal is to apply the research and classroom practices to the process of teacher preparation.

Why a Physical Education Services Center?

  • Many administrators lack the time, resources and expertise to facilitate significant program improvements.

  • Face-to-face consulting with external experts can contribute to effective collaboration across the district.

  • The center can provide expertise and invest energy in efforts to embellish program efforts without taking teachers away from teaching.

  • Materials and procedures created by the center can be disseminated to other districts and tailored to local contexts.

  • The center can collaborate with practitioners to address real-world situations to obtain real-world results.

Visions for Michigan Schools

By the year 2020, 80 percent of all high school graduates will:

  • Be proficient movers.

  • Be Fit!

  • Manage their own physical activity program

  • Use personal/social/attitudinal skills to be active throughout their life.

  • Engage in a variety of lifelong activities.
