Audiology information

 

The CMU Audiology Clinic is one of the largest audiology clinics in Michigan.  CMU provides the most comprehensive audiology services in Mid-Michigan and serves persons of all ages.

Our staff includes 10 licensed and certified audiologists.  CMU has the longest-standing professional audiology doctoral degree (Au.D.) program in the country, with 25-40 audiology students on-site per semester.

The Carls Center participates in all insurance plans that provide hearing benefits, including Medicaid and CSHCS.

 

Basic Audiology Services:

·        Comprehensive hearing evaluation for patients of all ages

·        Acoustic immittance evaluation of middle ear function and acoustic reflexes

·        Hearing aid selection, fitting, and follow up with all types of hearing instruments, from conventional through state-of-the-art digital signal processing systems for patients of all ages

·        Assistive listening device consultation

·        Cochlear implant evaluation, programming, and follow-up

·        Central  auditory processing evaluation

·        Audiologic rehabilitation

·        Audiologic outreach services for pre-schools, schools, nursing homes, and other residential care settings

·        Hearing screening

·        Hearing conservation programs

·        Educational auditory services provided in Mid-Michigan school districts

Electrophysiological Diagnostic Services

·        Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

o       Identifies hearing loss due to auditory nerve (CVIII) dysfunction

o       Identifies hearing impairment in infants and other patients unable to respond with conventional hearing assessment procedures

o       Identifies pseudohypoacusis

·        Staked ABR

o       Detects acoustic neuromas less than 1 cm in size, reducing over-referral for expensive MRI and CT scans

·        Event Related Auditory Evoked Potentials

o       Asses higher-level auditory processing relative to attention

·        Otoacoustic Emissions

o       Identifies dysfunction of the cochlear outer hair cells for differential diagnosis of sensory versus neural hearing loss

o       Helps estimate the degree of cochlear hearing impairment

Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation Services

·        Computerized Dynamic Posturography

o       Provides functional information related to balance and disequilibrium

·        Electronystagmorgraphy (ENG/VNG) and Rotary Chair/Postmorgraphy

o       Assists in differential diagnosis of central versus peripheral etiologies of dizziness

·        Electrocochleography (ECochG)

o       Assists in differential diagnosis of Meniere’s Disease

·        Canalith Repositioning

o       For treatment of dizziness due to Benign Paraxysmal Postional Vertigo (BPPV), usually arising from labyrinthine trauma, viral neurolabyrinthitis, or vertebrobasilar ischemia
