The Shortest Line Between You & Being
A CMU PA Is Self Discipline

Why Be A Central Michigan University PA?
The Mission of the Physician Assistant Program at Central Michigan University is:

  • to promote a standard of excellence in physician assistant education through an innovative curriculum
  • to develop compassionate, diverse, and professional leaders who provide high- quality, ethical health care
  • to emphasize the delivery of primary care to individuals and communities in rural and underserved areas

The Central Michigan University Physician Assistant Program is fully accredited by the ARC-PA. The charter class was admitted in 1996.

Responsibility
As a Central PA, you will learn the team concept of medical care. PAs are the only medical providers specifically trained in the team concept. CMU PA's set the example: we train as a team. We always work in tandem with a physician, even though the physician may not be physically present. You will learn to manage your resources and time. You will learn from faculty with over 100 combined years of health care experience.

Rewards
Everyone needs a challenge; it makes life worth living. When faced with the challenge of providing medical care in an adverse situation, CMU PAs develop the ability to improvise to meet patients' needs.

There are many benefits to practicing medicine. Being a PA has benefits that differ from being a physician. These are hard to illustrate and you don't hear much about them. Things such as pride of belonging to a team that commits exclusively to rural and underserved health care needs, intellectual courage and self discipline identify the CMU PA. You can't see or hold them, but they are real and become a part of your life.

If you become a CMU PA, you'll be with the intellectual elite who have a history of excellence. The professional title, Physician Assistant is something not everybody can earn. It is only awarded after 27 months of intense study and successful completion of the national board exams.

Prerequisites
The Central Michigan University PA School is a graduate program. This means you must have a Bachelor's degree from a regionally or internationally accredited university. Your GPA cannot be less than 2.8 (4.0). However, our mean GPA for successful applicants is approximately 3.5 (4.0). The choice of major and minor are yours. We require several courses in the sciences and strongly recommend that you have a robust background in clinical patient care.
Applicants are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of direct health care experiences through either volunteer work or employment experiences.

Admission Admission to the Central Michigan University PA Program is competitive. In addition to having a Bachelor's degree, you must submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam. If you successfully pass the initial screening, you will be invited to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan for an interview. Each class begins in May and graduates 27 months later in August.
