Background:
Dr. Vincent E.
Mumford is an associate professor in the Department of Physical
Education and Sport in The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health
Professions, at Central Michigan University. He specializes in Sports
Administration and Leadership.
Dr. Mumford received his doctoral degree from the University of Delaware
in Educational Leadership, where he studied as a Holmes Scholar. Dr.
Mumford has a diverse professional background with experience in
academics, administration, and athletics as a participant, teacher,
coach and administrator at various levels.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Mumford was a faculty member at the
University of Central Florida where he developed and served as
coordinator of the Sport Leadership Program. Before joining the faculty
at the University of Central Florida, Dr. Mumford served as Director of
Intercollegiate Athletics at the College of Southern Maryland, where he
provided leadership to the athletic, intramural, and recreation
department. While at the College of Southern Maryland, Dr. Mumford was
instrumental in the growth of the women’s program, increased funding,
new facilities, increased marketing efforts, and increased revenue.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Mumford worked in athletic administration at
Tennessee State University and Baltimore City Community College. He
began his career in higher education at the University of Delaware as an
Assistant Basketball Coach. In 1990, he became Supervisor of
Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Delaware where he was
responsible for the internal operations of 22 sports and coordinating
the summer sports camps program.
Dr. Mumford has received many honors and awards including Holmes
Scholar, Outstanding Mentor of the Year, Student of Promise, Dean’s
List, and Outstanding Young Men in America. He is a leading expert in
athletic administration and sports management. He has been appointed to
numerous committees and advisory boards, including Athletic Management,
the YMCA and the National Football League (NFL). He is frequently called
upon to consult or speak on various subjects such as: gender equity,
strategic planning, sales, marketing and promotions, fund raising,
facility design and operation, event management, and leadership.
Dr. Mumford is very active in a number of local and national
organizations including, the National Association of Holmes Scholars
Alumni (NAHSA), the Holmes Partnership, National Association of
Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Alliance of Two-Year
College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA), National Association of
Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), American Alliance for Health,
Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), and the National
Council on Student Development (NCSD).
In 2002, Dr. Mumford founded the Frances L. Hall Charitable Foundation,
in honor of his mother Frances Hall, a lifelong community humanitarian.
The Foundation was established to support nonprofit organizations that
focus on youth and family programs, education, health issues, and
community service in the Delmarva area.
