Welcome
to the Graduate program in Physical Therapy at Central Michigan University.
I encourage you to browse our website and learn more about our outstanding
faculty, talented students, and successful alumni. We are very proud of all
their accomplishments.
The physical therapy curriculum has been designed following a case based
educational model that places the multiple components of patient care at the
center of instruction. Students are challenged throughout the program to
think critically, master clinical skills, and reflect on what they have
learned. Professional behaviors and attitudes are emphasized in all areas of
the curriculum. The faculty and staff are committed to helping all students
in the program successfully make the transition to a competent, caring
health professional.
There are many exciting new developments in the Physical Therapy Program
that I would like to briefly highlight for you.
- The Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy moved into the new Health
Professions Building in Fall of 2004. The new facility provides us
with outstanding teaching, research, and clinical space. The innovative
features of the new Health Professions Building present our students
and faculty with many exciting new opportunities.
- The Graduate Program in Physical Therapy has made the transition from offering
an MS degree in Physical Therapy to granting a Doctor of Physical Therapy
(DPT). The program began in May, 2004. The DPT program will provide
our students with additional competencies and make a very good program
even better. We are very excited about this new program.
- The program had an accreditation site visit by the Commission
on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) in March, 2002.
Following this visit and careful review of our program by CAPTE we were
granted a 10 year re-accreditation. This action by CAPTE is a tribute to the
quality of our students and faculty.
- The graduates of the Graduate Program in Physical Therapy at Central
Michigan University continue to perform well in all measurable criteria. The
five year first time passing rate for CMU students on the national licensure
examination continues to be over 90%.
I congratulate the students and faculty for this achievement. Graduates of
the program are highly sought after by employers in all types of clinical
settings throughout the state and nation.
We continue in an exciting period of growth for the Profession of Physical
Therapy and for the Graduate Program in Physical Therapy at Central Michigan
University. We look forward with anticipation to the challenges of the next
year.
